Vanessa virginiensis

Common name: American Lady

Appearance:

  • Upperside is an uneven brown, yellow, and orange pattern with black tip on the forewing
  • White bar on the top of the forewing
  • Underside is a motley brown pattern with red and coral patches
  • Underside has two distinct large eyespots
  • 2-2.5 inch wingspan

Found: In open places with low vegetation such as meadows and vacant lots

Major foodplant: Pearly everlastings and other Compositae

Adults are active in: April - October
